What is GIS Mapping?

Sometimes in our daily life, even the simplest processes tend to get complicated over time. For example, suppose you need to move in direction such as from place A to destination B and you need to follow certain path to reach destination. If you move without any idea about the path, your path will get twisted and you will be lost. By the end of a complicated journey you realize something went wrong which is mapping. So next come to your mind what is mapping and where it is used?

Mapping is creating graphic or visual representations of information using spatial relationships within the graphic to represent some relationships within the data. The common practice of mapping is the scaled portrayal of geographical features known as cartography. Mapping is an approach to applying statistical analysis and other informational techniques to data which has a geographical or geospatial aspect. This analysis would typically employ software capable of geospatial representation and processing and apply analytical methods to terrestrial datasets, including the use of geographic information systems and geometrics.


The GIS map analysis includes metaphorical extensions of geographical map conventions and literacies to other kinds of data, moreover innovative ways of visualizing data not clearly related to the geographical model. In simple words, mapping can just mean organizing or systematizing information. Traditionally, mapping especially geographic map is created through cartographic protocols such as determining the scale or level of detail and content of geographic database, map forecast and organize system selection and transformations, entry measures and symbol specification for geospatial objects, simplification, layout design etc. The mapping term is also sometimes used for hi-tech geospatial data collection, e.g. LIDAR mapping. The collection of data with geo-referenced coordinates directly from terrain or imagery is more properly referred to as surveying.

In the case GIS mappingĀ  typically operations such as map overlay (combining two or more maps or map layers according to predefined rules), Normal buffering (identifying regions of a map within a specified distance of one or more features such as towns, roads and rivers) and similar basic operations. This reflected in the use of the term spatial analysis within the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) simple feature specifications. Moreover, mapping is used in Surface analysis where the properties of physical surfaces, such as slope, aspect and discernibility, and analyzing surface-like data. Network analysis another important use of mapping examine the properties of natural and man-made networks in order to understand the behavior of flows within and around such networks; and locational analysis. GIS mapping helps in Geo-visualization known as the creation and manipulation of images, charts, maps, diagrams, 3D views and their associated tabular datasets.
